Our Horses

Prince

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 1995
Breed: Hackney Pony
Height: 12hh

Prince is new to Racer Placers and we are just getting to know him. He is an older gentleman but still has plenty of "get up and go"!  He isn't saddle trained but would make a good companion for an adopter with some driving experience.

Blissful Beauty

Gender: Spayed Mare
Year Foaled: 2002
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 15hh

Blissful Beauty has come back to rescue. Aptly named, she is a beautiful, bright bay mare who has been saddle trained and simply needs a little refresher to be a very nice riding horse. She is currently being evaluated by a local trainer and we will have more information to follow.

Emerald

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 2002
Breed: Paint
Height: 15hh

We couldn't leave mom and baby in the feedlot. They are coming to Racer Placers for their second chance at a happy ending. More info to come as we get to know them.

RESCUED #001: The auction company says "Chestnut pinto mare with filly, 14 years old an 15 hh. Mom is halter broke and leads well. She was broke to ride before becoming a brood mare, and with an experienced rider she could be brought back to work. This is a good opportunity to have a baby on the ground without going through the breeding process".

Update: Please don't breed your horse unless you are financially capable of providing for their care or re homing them responsibly. This sweet mare and foal, rescued from slaughter, are shown arriving in Wisconsin. If you look closely, you can see that she has already quickly grabbed a mouthful of grass as she exited the trailer! Plenty more of that for you precious girl...you have been rescued!

P.S. Her vet check after arriving revealed Momma is carrying another foal. Please donate (any amount is appreciated) to help us continue to save the horses...and their babies too!

Update: Emerald has weaned her second foal, little Fiona, and will begin preparing for her own adoption day. After she has had a few weeks to rest and relax after raising her babies, we will begin to work with her to determine what training she may have had in her previous life.

Update: Emerald had her first ride today and it was obvious she had been ridden some time in her past. She is in no hurry, at least in the arena, but moves nicely and will soon go out on a trail ride. She has a lovely, smooth trot, and in a few days, we will ask for a canter.   Emerald is a kind, quiet gal who seems to be enjoying all the attention she is getting from our volunteer, Sandra!

Lover

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2003
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 15hh

Welcome Lover, a 14 year old Standardbred gelding, stands patiently during his saddle training. Off the track horses are accustomed to many sights and sounds while living on the track and their ground manners are often excellent. When it is time to transition to saddle training it is often a piece of cake!

Piper

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 1998
Breed: Shetland Pony
Height: 12.3hh

Piper is a "cute as a button" registered Shetland Pony gelding who has excellent ground manners but will need some training to become a riding pony.  Cared for and loved by his family for many years, he is ready to be that special pony for some lucky adopter.

Harpsichord

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 1998
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 15.3hh

Harpsichord, aka "Harp," is a tall, sturdy, kind-eyed Standardbred mare who rides both English and Western. Originally adopted through Racer Placers 5 years ago, we welcomed her back this summer. Ridden mostly English in her previous home, we have begun transitioning her to Western riding and think she will be a horse that will enjoy the trail. Harp is a very "forward" horse and for that reason we think she will do best with an experienced rider.

Spike

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2004
Breed: Hackney Pony
Height: 13.1hh

Spike is a Hackney Pony who is about 13 yrs old. Arriving at Racer Placers last spring, Spike was not terribly trusting at first, but is becoming more relaxed as we spend with time with him.  We hope soon to be able to harness him and see how he drives. Once in hand, his manners are excellent. He has a beautiful trot and is healthy.

Spike's Friend

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: ?
Breed: Hackney Pony
Height: 12 hh

This little pony is Spike's friend.  We will give an update when we know more about him.

Midnight and Trigger

Gender: Geldings
Middle aged
Breed: Mini
Height: 10.3hh

This adorable duo were well cared for and loved but a move necessitated their rehoming. They are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face just being in your presence! They were polite and friendly to visiting children at our recent adoption event.

Update: We have found that Midnight and Trigger have both been ridden and have some driving experience.  Trigger seems to be a little more experienced and willing while Midnight is happier with being doted on and groomed.

Bailey

Gender: Mare
Breed: Grade
Height: 15 hh

Bailey was rescued from auction out East and is a bit of a mystery to us. She has been in a foster home and now it is time to work with her and see where her talents lie. First on the agenda will be to slim her down. It looks like she had some beautiful pasture to enjoy since coming to Wisconsin!

Hailey

Gender: Mare
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 14.3hh

This sweet mare is looking for a retirement home.  More info to come!

Do Me Bliss

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2006
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 15.3hh

Do Me Bliss is a big, beautiful 11 yr old Standardbred gelding. Bliss is sweet, willing and ready to find his forever home. He has some trail experience, and responds beautifully to a light touch.

Fiona

Gender: Filly
Year Foaled: 2017
Breed: Walking Horse cross
Currently Unavailable

This sleepy-eyed little princess, named Fiona, just joined the Racer Placer's family January 30th, 2017. She was born to a mare (Emerald) who we rescued from the kill pen last fall who, at the time, had a colt (Finn) by her side (imagine a Momma and her baby being shipped to slaughter). Little did we know that Mom was already bred back. Isn't she pretty?

Hip Shaken' Mama

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 2011
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 14.2hh

Hip Shaken' Mama is a petite mare nicknamed "Spark Plug'. The perfect size for a smaller rider, she was unable to compete with the larger, longer legged harness racing horses. Her owner realized she might be better suited as a saddle horse or a pleasure driving horse. She has basic ground manners, was driven while on the track and is now being saddle trained at Acclaim Performance Horses in Jefferson, WI.

Update: This nicely put together mare, who is "not too tall and not too short", will make a lovely saddle horse. She is progressing in her training and is ready to join your family.

Amish Mafia/Espresso Moco

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2002
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 15.3hh

It is a shame that more Standardbred horses, like Amish Mafia, formerly known as Espresso Moco, aren't loved enough by someone to be included in the United States Trotting Association's Full Circle Program. According to Janet Terhune, a United States Trotting Association registrar,“It’s cost free, and a great way to ensure that former connections of a horse can have a hand in ensuring a safe, productive outcome for a horse that is no longer commercially viable." Moco was rescued after becoming a discarded Amish road horse. He is a gorgeous 14 years old Standardbred gelding who is currently in training and will become available for adoption in the near future.

Update: Today Amish Mafia is in good flesh and healthy. He is friendly and likes attention once he decides he can trust you. He is a very easy keeper. He singlefoots under saddle and is a very smooth ride. He is very alert, but not spooky.

We believe Amish Mafia could do well as a trail horse.

Adoption Fee: $400.00

Flag Dale Road

(Dale)

Gender: Gelding

Year Foaled: 2004

Breed: Standardbred

Height:15.2hh

Status:currently unavailable

He is here. He is safe. The only thing that allows us to post this heartbreaking photo is that in several months, with good care and good food this poor gelding will look like a completely different horse. Dale, rescued from the kill pen, is a Trotter who has been trained to drive .  Horses like Dale, often require special care to recover.  Please consider a donation to help Dale heal. Thank you!

Update: Flag Dale Road is shown here in the summer of 2016 a few months after rescue from the kill pen. It didn't take this fella long to put on weight once he was given good pasture and a well deserved rest.

Blush Seelster (Blush)

Gender: Mare

Year Foaled: 1994

Breed: Standardbred

Height:15hh

Status:currently unavailable

Welcome Blush! Blush is a Pacer who raced from 1996-2001 and is said to have won over $44,000.00. We don't know what her life was like from 2001 until she found herself in the kill pen at New Holland. We do know that from now on she will be cared for and loved as a sanctuary horse with Racer Placers or rehabilitated and adopted.

Update: Blush continues to gain weight and has also found a friend (Win-n-Grin/Mr. Personality) to lean on!  She has been enjoying sunny, green pastures and recuperating nicely since being rescued from the kill pens to the east.

Meet Me There (Whisper)

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2012
Breed: Standardbred
Size: 15hh

Meet Me There, aka Whisper, is now ready to begin some saddle training. He is a stunning gelding, very dark bay with three white feet. He is already harness trained, and loves people and attention.  Last summer he made his living babysitting a weanling!

Update: Whisper, aka Meet Me There, has been in training at Double Lane Horsemanship in West Bend. He is coming along nicely and ready to be adopted and finished your way!

Kaydon Begone

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2005
Breed: Standardbred
Size: 14.2hh

Kaydon Begone is a sweet gelding whose racing career has ended. Kaydon has the most amazing ears, which swivel way around when he wants to hear behind him.  He is a quiet driving horse, and will soon begin saddle training.

Norfolk Pine (Rip)

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 1999
Breed: Standardbred
Size: 17hh

This is Norfolk Pine/Rip and LeAnn Kissner of Acclaim performance Horses in Jefferson, Wi. at our Driving Fun Day.   After his racing career ended, Norfolk Pine spent many years as a “road horse” carrying a Pennsylvania family to town and church.  When he could no longer hold his weight while working so hard, he was sent to a sale where he ended up in the “kill pen”.   Saved from slaughter by Nancy Shaffer and sent to Wisconsin to Racer Placers, he arrived thin and weak.   Now, after more than a year at Acclaim, he is  healthy, in good flesh and ready for a new home.   He does a very nice singlefoot gait under saddle and his ground manners are excellent.  On May 14th, he will be 18 years old.

Update: Life has really improved for Norfolk Pine! From unwanted harness racing horse and the hard life of an Amish Road horse to well-fed, happy chauffeur to the horse loving girls at Acclaim Performance Horses in Jefferson, WI. He is ready to find a new home of his own thanks to the many people who have helped him along the way...Nancy Shaffer who saved him from the kill pens in the east and Lee Ann Kissner and her great team at Acclaim Performance Horses who helped heal his mind and his body. Thank you!

Dashing Victory

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 2003
Height: 15hh
Breed: Standardbred

"Dash" is a new arrival at Racer Placers. She was rescued from a kill pen in New Jersey along with her friend, Summerhill Sam, and arrived at Racer Placers in August of 2015.

Update: Dashing Victory, aka Dash, is a wonderful, kind mare who fits into any group. She has worked enough for two life-times and we decided that she is more suited as a companion horse and deserves retirement. We can only imagine the discomfort and fatigue she must have suffered on the hard, hilly roads of eastern Pennsylvania. After two years in Wisconsin, Dash is healthy and happy and in good flesh.

If you have room in your life and in your heart for a mare who has paid her dues many times over to mankind, Dash will reward you with years of love and affection.

Adoption Fee: $200.00

Abigail

Gender: Mare
Breed: Standardbred
Sanctuary Horse/Pasture Pal

Abigail is a very special little Standrardbred filly. Born without one eye and a possible cataract on the other, she faces many challenges. She stayed with her mother until she was 5 months old and then they both traveled to Racers Placers. When she was settled in, her mother returned home and Abigail began her new life with us. She has had a thorough examination with an ophthalmologist and neurologist at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison and we believe she has the potential to lead a happy, productive life with proper care and guidance. She is trusting and inquisitive and currently learning voice commands. She is currently not available for adoption as we continue her training.

Update: Our sweet Abigail has blossomed into a beautiful young lady. She is a confident, friendly horse who, despite her impaired vision, enjoys learning new things and is curious and confident. She has lived on the farm with friends to guide her, green grass to munch on and time to grow and mature but something is missing... she needs a permanent home with a horse/pony to keep her company and a special adopter to be her guardian and protector. Can you help Abigail?

Breed: Standardbred
Sanctuary Horse/Pasture Pal

Amelia

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 2004
Height: 16hh
Breed: Standardbred

ADOPTION PENDING

Amelia is currently being started at Double Lane Horsemanship LLC. With limited time and lack of previous handling, she is doing really well. She has about four rides on her so far and will start some trail riding soon. She isn't spooky and is a big, solid mare with a sweet personality. A trotter with a nice gait, she will make someone a great trail horse once she gets a few more miles on her. Amelia, like most of the other Standardbreds we have worked with, stands great for the vet and farrier and trailers well.

Update 8-20-14: Amelia is having all kinds of fun at Double Lane Horsemanship in West Bend!  This horse is a trotter who also gaits.  She is experiencing lots of new things and taking it all in stride.  She is ready to enjoy the fall colors on a trail ride!
